The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) and the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) have confirmed the three valid identity documents to vote in 2024. According to the SA Government website, the valid forms of identity documents to vote in the 2024 elections are the following …
The IEC will accept three forms of official identification to vote in the 2024 General Elections on Wednesday, 29 May. These are:
If you’re over the age of 18, you have the constitutional right to vote in South Africa. However, legislation dictates that voters must produce valid identity documents to vote in 2024. In less than five weeks’ time when Mzansi lines up to vote, we all must present valid identity documents so our vote is counted in 2024.
These will be scanned by the IEC’s zip-zip machines, which capture the ID number to confirm the voting district where you’re registered. The zip-zip machine then prints a bar-code sticker confirming the date, time and voting district. An IEC officer will then place this sticker into/onto your ID document as proof of voting.
For those in need of identity documents to vote in 2024, time is running out. However, here’s how you can apply online to speed up the process. Firstly, you must be a South African citizen and 18 years of age or older to vote.
You will need to produce some form of identification for the DHA. An old green mamba ID booklet (if you have one), driver’s licence or passport all count. If you were born elsewhere, a government-issued foreign identification card and/or passport from that country will also be accepted.
Anyone in need of identity documents to vote in 2024 must submit the following information (if applicable to you):
A Temporary Identity Certificate (TIC) issued by the Department of Home Affairs to those who have lost or not yet received their ID book follows the same process as a regular ID application. Moreover, Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi says all permanent and temporary DHA offices will be open on and ahead of Wednesday, 29 May, election day, to assist anyone with a TIC, reports SABC News.
The minister confirms, “On election day, all Home Affairs offices will open as long as voting stations are open. Any person who might have a mishap with their ID will have a right to go to any home affairs office to collect a Temporary Identification Certificate.”
