How many goals does Bradley Grobler need to become PSL’s all-time top goalscorer?

Bafana Bafana legend Siyabonga Novethe holds the record for most PSL goals, but Bradley Grobler is not far from breaking the record.

SuperSport United striker Bradley Grobler could be the Premier Soccer League (PSL) all-time goalscorer next season.

The 36-year-old veteran has scored 112 PSL goals in his career and is just 12 shy of becoming the league’s all-time top goalscorer.

Bafana Bafana legend Siyabonga Novethe still holds the record with 123 goals. His goal against Sekhukhune United on Tuesday saw him become the first player to score 10 goals or more in a PSL season on five occasions.

Bradley Grobler is the first PSL player to score 10 goals or more in five different seasons so far. He achieved this feat in the 2010/2011 season playing for Platinum Stars, and then repeated this in 2019/2020, 2020/2021, 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons, all while playing for SuperSport United.

In the 2020/2021 season, he was awarded the Lesley Manyathela Golden Boot award and was the league’s top scorer.

Speaking to Andile Ncube on Sports Night Amplified, the striker opened up about his Bafana Bafana future. Despite his impressive record in the PSL, Grobler has only made 13 appearances for the national team, scoring twice.

Bradley Grobler eyeing another PSL record

“Realistically, I think those days are gone, and that ship has sailed, but I will not stop trying”, Grobler said.

“I do not have a lot of regrets when it comes to my career but not having had more of an impact in the national team is one of them, especially when I think about how injuries affected me,” he said.

The former Platinum Stars forward, though, has not closed the door on his Bafana comeback.

Having spent 11 years with Matsatsantsa, Bradley Grobler said he was content despite not having played for a big team. A move to Kaizer Chiefs nearly materialised around 2020, but the Soweto giants were banned from signing players.

SuperSport’s ‘snipper’ is already on double figures this season

So far, he has scored 10 goals this campaign despite SuperSport’s struggles. “This season, I have felt extremely good. I played pretty much every game. I am not thinking about retirement, and now I want to go for that top goal scorer record.”

Despite scoring goals for fun, Bradley Grobler has a reputation os scoring important goals. Out of the 100+ league goals he scored, 48 of them were opening goals. Having turned 36 in January, the man known as the ‘snipper’ does not look like slowing down on the goals. It might take him a season or two to break Novethe’s record.
